This is an older book and not very accurate. I attempted to use the signs in this book. My deaf and hard of hearing friends explained the signs in the book are not accurate and were often confused by my signs. They were very helpful and corrected me. This book is actually more trouble than it's worth.
Pros:Tons of wordsExtra listings when a word had multiple meaningsDetailed instructions for hand placement and movement for signs.Cons:It's difficult to make out some of the pictures, because the hands are so small and the book is in black and white
This book is an amazing resource if you're trying to learn Sign language. The alphabetical organization makes it the perfect reference guide. I also thought about ordering a book that arranged words by hand shape but I'm glad I went with this one instead since I'm not yet communicating with anyone fluent in ASL I don't have the need to look up words based on signs I'm seeing while conversing with someone. Furthermore, you can just ask the person that you're talking to what a sign means and they can spell it out for you. The ASL alphabet is in the very beginning of this book.This book also explains the meaning of each sign so although some words in English are the same you're able to read through and figure out which sign applies.
This is a wonderful dictionary, but FYI it is the ABRIDGED version. I guess I didn’t pay close enough attention when I ordered it
I took a couple sign language class some years ago and wanted to relearn. This is one of the best resources I've seen. I'm not a visual person, but this is easy to understand how I'm supposed to form the sign and there are a LOT of signs included.
Best one-volume book I've found on signing. Many pictures w/ details on actually making the sign. The dictionary format is invaluable. The book is so good, I've left my copy at work-I'm a licensed psychiatric nurse working with autism-spectrum, developmentally disabled adults (I would identify my employer, but even THAT might be a HIPAA violation). At any rate, I may buy another copy for my home library since I can use an ASL reference work, and THIS copy is out at work.
I use this dictionary constantly. There are a lot of old signs in here but I get to be familiar with them in case I ever see them. I used this for class a lot and it has helped me improve my vocabulary.
